Bounty needed on coyotes

Another rural voice has been heard regarding coyotes. Mabel Dougherty, a former reeve and Onondaga-area farmer urged Brant County to press the province for the return of a coyote bounty program.

Dougherty told Brant County council last night (Tuesday) that the most effective way to control the growing coyote problem is to bring back a bounty program.

She noted that some coyotes don't attack livestock, "but if you have a coyote that has tasted a fresh kill, that's different."

She implored mayor Ron Eddy, recently re-elected to the board of directors of the lobby organization Association of Municipalities of Ontario, to get that organization to press the issue at Queen's Park.

Southwest Oxford council

Southwest Oxford council has adopted a new policy that outlines how they save money and how they will spend it once it is saved. Mayor david mayberry says the purpose of reserves is to ensure that the municipality can do necessary work when it needs to be done

Mayberry does note one change for the council.  This year was that they decided to borrow the money for the west Mount Elgin road project rather than draining all of their resevrves. Council is also contemplating debenturing which is the municipal equivalent of borrowing for tile drain projects, which puts a huge strain on township  coffers.

If you are thinking of a career with a township municipality in Oxford and vacation time is important, than Norwich Township is the place to be.  According to a comparison of vacation times across the County prepared for Zorra Council, Norwich gives three weeks of holidays after 2 years of employment. At the other end of the scale is Zorra Township, where you get three weeks of holidays once your sixth year of employment has started. The County gives 3 weeks after 3 years  as well as Ingersoll and Tillsonburg.  The remaining municipalities give three weeks after 4.

…......................

User groups in Zorra that need timekeepers for games in the area will have to start supplying their own.  Council has decided that because of previous problems, the staff hired to peg the nets will now be used for other arena duties rather than providing time keeping services. The net peggers will only work on nights that minor hockey games are scheduled.  Any other user group using the nets are responsible for pegging them in place themselves.  Hiring the additional part time staff will cost the township almost $10,000.

…........................

Zorra staff and councillors are continuing to meet with representatives of the gravel and aggregate industries in an attempt to come to some sort of agreement around the establishment of new pits.  Zorra had threatened to impose  an interim control bylaw banning any new operations for a year, but have put that move on hold as discussions continue.  The township is worried about the impact of increasing traffic, noise and wear and tear on the roads, but is working with the industry to come up with viable solutions.

..............................

Some trivia also emerged at council. There are 140 intersections in Zorra Township that have stop signs. The 25th line leads the way for traffic slowdowns with 9 stop signs.

If found guilty of violating the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act, Ford could be ousted from office and barred from running for city council for seven years.

He could also be let off if the judge finds that he made a mistake or an error in judgment.

Jean Charest is now weighing his options.

The loss by the Liberals in the Quebec election is doubly painful for the premier.

He lost his own seat in the riding of Sherbrooke to Parti Quebecois candidate Serge Cardin.

It's one of 54 seats the P-Q won -- nine short of a majority.

The Liberals have 50 seats in the new National Assembly.

The upstart Coalition for Quebec's Future has 19.

Tragedy marred Tuesday night's victory speech from Pauline Marois.

Police say one person was killed and another wounded by gunfire as Quebec's premier-in-waiting was speaking in a Montreal assembly hall.

Marois -- who was celebrating a minority government win -- was quickly hustled off the stage by body guards.

The suspect reportedly armed with a handgun and a rifle and wearing a balaclava and housecoat over his clothers, was wrestled to the ground and arrested.

Investigators say there's no clear motive for the shooting. The man yelled, “the english are waking up” at TV cameras as he was led away by police.
