DeCloet, a Simcoe-based company that manufactures greenhouses, has been fined $60,000 for a work place accident that injured an employee.
On April 22nd, 2009, a worker injured a hand while processing pieces of metal tubing, which were to be assembled to make trusses. There was no protective shield on the drill press and the worker had not been given any specific training on the machine's safety hazards. He was using a plastic bottle to spray coolant onto the drill bit. he grabbed for it when it started to fall over and his gloved hand got caught in the spinning drill bit and was pulled into the machine.
In addition to the fine, the court also imposed a 25-per-cent victim surcharge that is credited to a special provincial government fund to assist victims of crime.
