On February 16, 2017, the Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Southwold Fire Department, Elgin St. Thomas Emergency Medical Services (EMS), and Oneida EMS, responded to a collision involving commercial motor vehicles on Highway 401 westbound, east of Union Road.
After closer investigation it has been revealed that two tractor trailers were involved (not three, as initially reported).
A white Volvo tractor trailer travelling eastbound on Highway 401 crossed the centre median, rolled over, and collided with a white Freightliner tractor trailer travelling westbound on Highway 401.
The male driver (and lone occupant) of the Freightliner is deceased. He has been identified as 66-year-old Gary LENT, from Etobicoke, Ontario.
The male driver (and lone occupant) of the Volvo was transported by ambulance with serious injuries to hospital, where he is currently listed in good condition.
The OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) attended the scene to assist with the investigation.
Both lanes of Highway 401 westbound were closed at Union Road and an Emergency Detour Route (EDR) was utilized.
The Highway 401 westbound outside lane was re-opened to traffic at approximately 11:50 a.m. The Highway 401 westbound inside lane (closest to the median) remains closed as material is still being cleared from the scene.
