A Simcoe native has received an honorable national award for his photojournalism work.

29 year old Zachary Prong won the 2016 News Photographers Association of Canada's Photograph of the Year.

Prong at first did not think this would be his fate. In 2013 he received a scholarship to study in both Israel and Palestine. He purchased a camera prior to the trip to document his endeavors.

His adventures and studies have taken him to many third world countries, including Helmond Province, which is one of the most dangerous places in Afghanistan.

That is where he snapped his prized photo of a young boy at a refugee camp. The boy and his family had recently fled the town of Sangin after his father became one of the thousands of civilians killed during fighting between the government and Taliban forces.

His work has been featured in a number of publications throughout Canada and Egypt.
