Feds Invest in Hazelnut Production

A federal government investment rolled out yesterday will help launch hazelnut farming in Ontario.  At the Simcoe Research Station, London North MP Peter Fragiskatos announced $492,000 in funding to the Ontario Hazelnut Association to be used to develop orchard management practices to enhance early development of hazelnut trees. The project is a partnership between the University of Guelph and Ferraro Canada.  Ferraro spokesperson Barb Yates says the company – known for Ferraro-Rocher chocolate and Nutella – currently sources most of its hazelnuts from Turkey.  Local producers would have a significant impact on the need to import, says Yates.  She adds, the company would welcome a chance to use locally grown hazelnuts at its production facility in Brantford.

The goal is to establish 10,000 hectares of hazelnut production in the province by 2027.
