A recent funding boost for the Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital will be used to open extra beds.

President and CEO Sandy Jansen says in a press release, the hospital has been bursting at the seams, running well above 100% capacity for over a year. The extra beds will help reduce overcrowding and wait times for patients waiting for an emergency room beds.

The temporary funding, to the tune of $494,000 will pay for an extra 10-bed unit.

Part of the overcrowding issue is due to flu outbreaks at area long-term care homes. Many patients are forced to stay in hospital because of outbreaks at their home.
