Carbon monoxide is known as the silent killer but, thanks to “End the Silence”, more people are getting CO alarms and fewer people are dying. Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman, Fire Chief Jeff Smith, Deputy Mayor Dave Beres, Todd Jerry of the Insurance Bureau of Canada, and John Gignac of the Hawkins-Gignac Foundation were at the Tillsonburg Fire Hall today to promote the use of CO alarms.

The Bureau donates about 1500 alarms annually to the Ontario campaign, 150 of those are for Tillsonburg, Ingersoll, and Norwich.

According to Gignac, prior to the passing of Ernie Hardeman's private member's bill – the “Hawkins Gignac Act” requiring carbon monoxide detectors, about 30-40% of homes had them.  Now it is estimated at 70%. The goal of this on-going campaign is to raise that number, eventually to 100% compliance... And no deaths.
