Norfolk County Fire was able to avert a structure fire yesterday [june 18] afternoon. They were called to Lighthouse Cres. in Long Point and found a large pile of wood had caught fire. The flames were spreading toward a garage, and the heat from the fire had already started melting the siding on the building. But, according to Fire Chief Gord Stilwell, the firefighters did an excellent job bringing the fire under control within minutes of arriving on scene. Damage is estimated at $4,000.

It appears that the cause of the fire was careless disposal of hot ashes from a fire pit. Local smoakies have already responded to numerous grass fires this season and they are reminding us that, as the weather warms up, we need to be extra careful with open burns, camp fires, and disposal of smoking materials.
