An elderly Norfolk County man suffered serious burns and was rushed to hospital following an explosion at a Charlotteville Road 8 home on Monday afternoon.

Firefighters were dispatched to a possible structure fire during the noon hour after neighbours heard a loud explosion and spotted smoke.

Crews immediately set to work extinguishing several small fires inside the residence that seem to have started as a result of the initial explosion. The house was not permanently occupied. The property owner was working in the basement of the residence when the explosion occurred.

While fire damage to the building was minimal, significant structural damage did occur as a result of the explosion.

The cause remains under investigation, but is not considered suspicious.

Damage is estimated at $100,000. Its not known if the building was insured.
