The U-S says the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad and its militias are using “new horrific tactics” in their crackdown on dissidents.

The accusation follows reports from U-N observers who charge that Syrian helicopters are firing on residents of rebellious areas.

Activists say more than 50 people were killed Monday across Syria.
